Creating an Interactive Motion Pad Using After Effects
I've always been fascinated by the responsive graphics on mobile devices, especially the elasticity and inertia in the movement of graphics on a mobile phone or tablet. As a designer with a scientific background, I find the physical reaction to fingertip actions captivating. This inspired my Generative Sphere Line Path project, where I explored the visual interpretation of the action chain, linking each movement to create meaningful digital interactions.
Microanalyzing Lexical Diversity of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer
American literary scholars have debated the "Great American Novel" concept since John William DeForest coined the term in 1868. This novel is characterized by distinctly American characters, language, and themes. Modern text analysis software allows digital humanists to quantitatively explore what distinguishes a "Great American Novel." Ernest Hemingway famously stated, "All modern American literature comes from… Huckleberry Finn." Using Python for microanalysis of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, we can quantitatively examine lexical diversity, plot elements, and writing style, providing new insights and confirming observations from close reading.
Interactive Sound Generating Pad in a City
Looking at a photo is a fascinating process. The pictorial space suggests depth, dimension, and spatial gesture. As the viewer explores, they discover elements like points, lines, and planes, which can serve as raw materials for new shapes. Instead of relying solely on imagination, I extracted these visual elements to generate possible shapes. The first step involves generating shapes from the photographic resource, akin to a virtual sculpture project, transitioning from the project space to creating new forms.
Interactive Sound Generating Pad in a City
Inspired by Sol LeWitt’s cube works, I aimed to transfer 3-dimensional sphere paths into 2-dimensional lines. Generative design relies on completing the design using lines and planes created by principles and rules set by the designer. The outcome varies widely based on the system created, sometimes leading to fortunate unintended results. In this case, the lines are generated by exploring various paths from top to bottom.
Generative Typography
To develop as a designer from a data scientist, I started thinking about how to prepare these materials for my designs. The appeal of generative art is that any genre or form of information can be used as a material for visual design. In this case, I used the alphabet as an asset for a generative design project.
Generative Pattern
I began the project by noting that the location of small items like cell phones, AirPods, keys, and wallets often varies. Over the course of a month, I recorded the location of these items throughout the day. This data was then converted into visual information, graphically expressing the movement of each item. Despite its simplicity and personal nature, the graphical representation made the information more intuitive and easier to understand.
